Hi everyone! I hope you are enjoying your summer break.

I started teaching my summer school class today. I'm teaching reading and writing to a group of 4th and 5th graders. We had a great first day today!

The day after summer school is over, I'll be going on a family vacation to Maui! I can't wait!!!

As I mentioned on the last day of school, I'll try to post as often as I can on our blog.

Have you been reading any good books? I just started reading Ruby Lu: Empress of Everything by Lenore Look.

Field Day & Pool Party!

Just a few reminders about this fun-filled day!

For Field Day(9:15-11:50)...

Wear a bathing suit underneath your clothes because you will most likely get wet!
Wear gym shoes since you will be running at some of the stations
NO WHITE T-SHIRTS
Bring sunscreen lotion so you won't get burnt. You will be outside for 6 hours!!!
Bring a water bottle clearly marked with your name on it.
The snack station will include: raisins, apples, Flav-R-Ice, and cookies. Contact Ms. Csensich if you have any concerns.

For Camelot(11:50-3:00)...

Bring a bag with a towel, sandals, and change of dry clothing
You are allowed to bring water toys for the pool, but NO WATER GUNS!
We will be walking to the pool after Field Day
We will be picnicking outside -- bring a disposable lunch -- you may want to include an extra snack for later in the afternoon.
After lunch, we will have recess at Camelot Park. You may bring sports equipment(frisbees, basketball, etc.), but it is your responsibility to carry them. We will not be responsible for any lost items.

Remember that this day is a privilege and not a right. We expect excellent behavior from each of you. Please show off the Character Counts pillars. We want our school to be represented well and invited back to Camelot next year!

The district is offering a Summer U class at no cost to parents!

This class is part of the Science Companion program, which came from the creators of Everyday Math. They have asked us to partner with them as they work to integrate 21st Century tools into their program.

Everyday Science: Motion. Third and fourth graders will be participating in marble drops, sliding/sticking activities, and gravity activities. They will also have some experience with model car racing and the concept of creating roller coasters!

Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. More information can be found in the letter that will be handed out tomorrow.

Preventing the Flu: Good Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs

Avoid close contact.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your

distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.

Stay home when you are sick.

Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. Keep sick children

at home. You will help prevent others from catching the illness.

Cover your mouth and nose.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Throw the

tissue in the trash after you use it.

Wash your hands often.

Washing your hands and the hands of your children often will help protect you

from germs.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated

with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Practice other good health habits.

Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of

fluids, and eat nutritious food.

There is no vaccine available at this time for the current outbreak of the Swine Flu virus, so it is important for

people living in the affected areas to take steps to prevent spreading the virus to others. If people are ill, they should

stay at home and limit contact with others, except to seek medical care. Healthy residents living in these areas

should take the everyday preventive actions listed above.

People who live in these areas who develop an illness with fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and

runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhea, should contact their

health care provider. Their health care provider will determine whether influenza testing is needed.

Science for the 21st Century

Dear Parents,

Please read the following from our district's Curriculum and Instruction department. It sounds like a wonderful opportunity for our students!

A science class will be held June 22-26 at South Middle School from 10:30 -11:15 a.m. This is for students in grades 3-5. It will be taught by Dr. Rod Doran and Dr. Randy Yerrick, from the University of Buffalo. This class is FREE!

Parents are responsible for transportation to and from South Middle School.

If interested, please email Diana Donovan in the Instruction department at ddonovan@sd25.org with the following information: child's name, current grade level, & school name. Emails will be accepted by May 8th.

Parents will be notified if your child is selected.

Third Time IS a Charm!

We were FINALLY able to visit the Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art today! I hope you all enjoyed the beautiful displays of the cut and polished stones. You did a fabulous job of completing the scavenger hunt with your partner.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed by some of your silly behavior in the museum and on the bus. In order for us to go on any more field trips, you will have to earn my trust that you can behave like mature fourth graders. We plan on going to the Art Institute with Mrs. Avella in April and have the Living Sea Aquarium come to Ivy for an at-school field trip in May. They will be bringing in some very cool "touch" exhibits, and this will go perfectly with our Oceans/Whale Unit!

Native American Cultural Regions

We have finished reading about all seven Native American cultural regions. Our chapter 3 test will be this Thursday! Make sure you study your color coded flashcards we created in class and take the tutorial as many times as you need to before Thursday. We'll review and share our group presentations on Wednesday.

Here are some silly ways to remember a ton of information(created by the creative and clever Mrs. Cheek!):

Northwest Coast: The Cool Kwakiutl live on the Coast. They wear waterproof cedar bark capes, trap salmon with cedar bark fish traps, and live in wooden houses with cool cedar totem poles.

California Intermountain Region: The Pretty Pomo, wear pretty shell necklaces, and make pretty baskets decorated with shells and beads. The Pretty Pomo live in a pretty cone shaped redwood house.

Southwest: The Hot Hopi live in the Southwest and have to stay cool by wearing cotton dresses. The Hot Hopi are thirsty from being so hot and from climbing the ladders up to their adobe apartments. They are so thirsty that they store water to drink in clay pots.

Plateau: (This is the gross one.:)) This region is shaped like a foot and it is green! This region is the Plateau (Pla- TOE) Yuk. The Yakima lived there and ate roots to survive. Roots are at your toes (Pla-TOE). The Yakima lived in underground winter houses--think roots are underground, too. You can remember that they put baskets on their heads because everything else is already at their feet.

Great Plains: Think PLAIN and simple. The Sioux lived here. (Think: Sue is a simple name.) They used buffalo for everything! Buffalo and teepees are PLAIN and simple to remember when you are studying Native Americans.

Eastern Woodlands: Think tongue twister! The Algonquian (Al-gon-kwee-an) in the Eastern Woodlands lived in wigwams wearing wild turkey-feather ceremonial capes. The turkey is a bird and you can link that to a turkey bird birch canoe. :)

Southeast: The Southern Seminole used cypress canoes. To keep safe from the sharp saw grass they wore deerskin leggings. They lived in palm leaf chickees so they wouldn't sweat!
